Emotional Support Animals (ESA's) are companion animals that offer comfort, support, and assist in mitigating symptoms related to a person's disability. Federal law does not require an ESA to have any specialized training like a "Service Animal" or "Therapy Animal" and there are no animal or breed restrictions, as long as it is reasonable and justified.

Generally, one must have some emotional or psychological condition that is improved by the companionship of the support animal. Conditions may include depression, generalized anxiety, paranoia, insomnia, adjustment disorders, and many others.

Colleges and universities will sometimes require additional information (outside of an approved ESA letter) from licensed medical and/or mental health providers that details the specific needs of a student requesting to reside with their emotional support animal. Policies differ amongst institutions, but often, the process requires more specific information to be disclosed (Protected Health Information (PHI)) and additional and extensive paperwork to be completed about how the approved animal mitigates symptoms of a designated behavioral health diagnosis.
Additional college and university requests can often be quite detailed and complex. Clients' who require supporting documentation for college and university accommodations will be subject to an additional fee of $225.00. This one-time fee will cover any additional correspondence needed from Reflect & Renew Counseling Services, PLLC to facilitate the approval and/or allowance of your ESA being able to reside with you in campus-based housing. Fees must be paid in full to this practice at the time of request. Reflect & Renew is here to support you throughout the year your animal is approved as an ESA.
Clients are solely responsible for identifying the rules and expectations regarding the presence of emotional support animals on college and/or university controlled properties.
